In order to use a sole-proprietorship in Ontario or Québec it must first be registered.

Upon registration in Quebec you will obtain your Numéro d'entreprise de Québec (NEQ). A sole-proprietorship registration does not protect the name. Only incorporation protects your name in the province of Québec.

Upon registration in Ontario you will receive your Master Business License from the Ontario Ministry. A sole-proprietorship registration will not protect the name. Only incorporation will protect your name in the province of Ontario.

Whether you are choosing an Ontario or Quebec sole-proprietorship a name search will be performed before registration if you are operating with a trade name different than your given name.
